Year 1's New Learning Agreement

Today the children were introduced to the first Learning Agreement of term 3. The structure of the Learning Agreement document has again changed to indicate the chilldren's development. Now the learning experiences are outlined on the agreement. The engagement of the children today in all the learning spaces was incredible and some amazing work was produced.

Swimming Notices

Today pink permission form about swimming went home with the children who had expressed an interest in the swimming program. Those children that did receive a pink notice were those that notified us that they did not want to participate in the swimming program or have not returned the expression of interest form. All children must return the expression of interest form to indicate their preference. Geoff needs to know exact numbers.
Reflecting on our Excursion

Today the Year 1 Neighbourhood began  reflecting on our excursion to the State Library of Victoria. After lunch we discussed as a neighbourhood what it means to reflect. The children made some insightful comments when asked 'What is Reflecting?'
Lucas started the coversation with 'You go forward, then you back'
Mary then asked 'How do you go back?'
Taylor replied 'With your mind;
Mirsu expanded on Taylor's comment by adding 'You rethink'
Nicole added 'You remind yourself what you did'

The children rotated around 3 learning experiences; writing a recount with Mark, representing the experience creatively with Mary and reflecting on the experience through the thinking routine 'I see ... I think ... I wonder ....' with Jessica. The children will continue with the recounts and the creative reflection next week during learning agreement. Below is what the children choose to draw when asked to represent what they saw and what had an impact on them at the library.

I found this postcard on the weekend and wanted to share it with the neighbourhood as I think it sums up why learning to read is so important. - Jessica

Author Study: Pamela Allen

Our Author Study for term 3 is Pamela Allen. Janette has borrowed a great selection of Pamella Allen books from the school and her local library, but if children have any of their own that they would like to share with the neighbourhood we encourage them to bring these books to school.

Our excursion to the State Library of Victoria

On Monday the 23rd of July the Year 1 Neighbourhood headed to the State Library of Victoria to learn more about writing. The neighbourhood was a buzz with excitement. The children sat in their home group area with their lunchs and when the 9am bell rang the rolls were quickly marked, then everyone boarded the buses headed for the State Library. At the library the children children lined up in their exclamation mark, question mark and full stops groups ready for the 3 activiities. Upon entering the State Library Will H commented "This looks like Hogwarts from Harry Potter"

My Library Adventure - The children explore the library and helped Mother Bookworm find her six babies

Mother Bookworm

Book Making - The children learnt how to make a small book and had the opportunity decorate them. The children were able to take these home.

Snack and play -  Time to explore the Experimedia Room

What are these boys playing?
Throughout the week the Neighbourhood will be reflecting on what we saw, thought, learnt and now wonder. Watch this space for the reflections.

Beginning in Week 3 the Year 1 Neighbourhood will require three parents (twice weekly) to assist us with maths workshops. If you are able to assist could you please add you name to the timetable that will displayed on the little blackboard outside the door of the Year 1 Neighbourhood. If you have signed in and are unable to attend it is important that you let us know prior to the day.

We are also looking for one parent helper a week to assist for 20 - 30 minutes on a Friday morning in the Library. The helper will be required to return the neighbourhood's library books and assist the children in borrowing new books.

'We are going on a writing hunt...'

The bus will leave PHPS at approximately 9.05 am on Monday 22nd. Students will need to arrive early. Please bring a snack, which can be eaten during the games session. We will be eating lunch together on the library forecourt, so please bring a packed lunch (no lunch orders for Yr 1 on Monday!). Some of us are wondering, from all the books in the State Library, "Which books and writing would you love to read if you could?" and if you were to write, "What would you write about and who would you like to have read your writing?"
Welcome Back

A big welcome back to all the children and families of the Year 1 Neighbourhood. It has been lovely to see everyone again and share holiday stories. Yesterday Janette returned to school after her long service leave in term 2. Mary and Janette will both be at school for 2 1/2 days, Mary at the beginning of the week and Janette in the second half. Simon will be in on Thursdays while Mark is the library and he is very excited about continuing the Mathematics project. A big welcome to our 4 new children, Mabel, Sofia, Daisy and Toby and their families.
