Auslan: You can teach yourself at home

Today while in the Library with Jessica, Quang-Dihn found a website with videos of people demonstrating Auslan (Australian Sign Language). The link has been added below. I challenge all the childen to take a look at the website and to learn one new sign to demonstrate to the neighbourhood.

How do our parents use writing in their jobs?

Today we had the first group of parents come in and share how they use writing in their jobs. A big thank you to Nicole, Ben, Nina and Josh for taking the time to come and talk to the Year 1 Neighbourhood. It was fascinating to see the different ways people use writing. The children learnt about how doctors use short hand, how print is used in bars and restaurants and how newspapers were put together.

Letter and Survey

How do people in our community use writing?

Today the children will be bringing home a letter and a survey about writing for you to complete. The letter was composed by the children over a number of weeks in letter writing workshops with Jessica and the children wrote the survey questions earlier in the term. We have also written a letter and survey for other members of the community. If you have a family friend or know a member of the community that would not mind filling in our survey please come and collect another letter and survey from the entrance area of the neighbourhood. If you have any questions please feel come and see Mary, Mark or Jessica.

Learning Agreement: Construction

As part of the Learning Agreement that is going home this week the children could create signs for the neighbourhood in the little construction area. Some of these signs have been printed and put up in the neighbourhood. Below are just a few examples of the amazing constructions.
